The Planning Canvas

The Planning Canvas

The planning Canvas is a tool I created to help remote teams conduct Scrum Planning. I put it into a spreadsheet and later ported it to Confluence. I use to do this freehand on a whiteboard using sticky notes but with remote teams, this can be very difficult. Here is the basic idea:

1) Determine the capacity of your team

2) Identify the Epics you need to accomplish for the next three months

3) The Product Owner prioritizes the Epics

4) Identify the dependencies, Risks, Issues, and Assumptions for your Epics

5) Size your Epics (use Story Points or T-shirt size)

6) The team negotiates and commits on what Epics they wish to complete for each month

7) Place the Epic into the appropriate column (i.e. month)

8) Re-adjust based upon changing priorities and dependencies

A Potentially Shippable Product is the sum of the Product Backlog Items delivered each Sprint. Delivering Potentially Shippable Product each Sprint is fundamental to Scrum because when work is divided into simple pieces it can be finished in short iterations.

Scrum Release Planning. A very high-level plan for multiple Sprints (e.g. three to twelve iterations) is created during the Release planning. It is a guideline that reflects expectations about which features will be implemented and when they are completed. It also serves as a base to monitor progress within the project.
